Toolbox for Environmental Change 2012

Leadership in Sustainability

The OSGP team is participating for its 2nd consecutive year in the Toolbox for Environmental Change forum this March; Victoria’s premier conference for those involved in education for sustainability.

Greening Australia, in partnership with Sustainability Victoria and Melbourne Museum, is now in its twelfth year.  The 2012 forum will be held on Thursday 22nd March at Melbourne Museum.

With dozens of workshops and displays, the Toolbox for Environmental Change forum is the ‘one stop shop’ for curriculum resources, networking and ideas for taking environmental action and promoting sustainability within school communities.

In 2012, the focus of leadership in sustainability will be explored in the context of school-community partnerships, student leadership, ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic school case studies and the VELS and National Curriculum frameworks. Programs will be available early in 2012 for participants to select workshops and to announce keynote speakers.

Hands on workshops and informative displays will be presented by leading environmental sustainability education organisations, local councils, green businesses, leading schools and many more.

In October 2011 the first ever The BFA Junior Organic Cook-Off at MasterChef Live”  was held in Sydney.  There were twelve LIVE shows complete with celebrity chefs.  All Junior Organic MasterChef participants were selected from schools registered with the Organic School Gardens Program.

The “Junior Organic MasterChef Competition”, was a feature of Australia’s only Certified Organic Market with many opportunities to taste and buy a dazzling array of organic food and drinks. With live shows over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the event, the Organic School Garden students had to outdo their peers in time trials and invention tests to present the best dishes on the day!

Holly Vyner General Manager of BFA (parent body for ACO) says that the “Junior Organic MasterChef Competition” raised awareness of the importance of organic foods for children:

"The health benefits of eating organic for children are particularly relevant. Some of the key benefits include reducing food intolerances, reducing exposure to antibiotics, hormone disruptors and toxins (most important for growing and developing bodies) and gaining a taste for healthy food at a young age. Apart from this there are many environmental reasons for choosing organics."
